Chapter 1: SMILE FOR ME (June 12, 2007)[]
Hello… Let me introduce myself.
My name is Jeremy Jones. I’m 17 years old and a huge Sonic fan—especially when it comes to the Chaotix. I’ve always liked Knuckles more than Sonic. I even have more Knuckles merch than Sonic stuff, but eh… it’s fine.
So, last night, I was about to play Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) for the chaos and memes, when—
DING DONG.
I heard the doorbell ring.
Weird.
It was 1:00 a.m. My parents were out hanging with friends, and I definitely wasn’t expecting anyone. Curiosity got the better of me, and like the horror movie idiot I apparently am, I went downstairs to check.
When I opened the door, there was no one there. Just a single box sitting on the doorstep. No name. No return address. Just one message, scrawled across the top in shaky, uneven lettering:
"DO NOT OP3N."
Naturally, I opened it.
Inside was a copy of Knuckles’ Chaotix—but not just any copy. It was for PC. That didn’t even make sense. The game never released on PC. Still, I was hyped. My first thought?
"Oh snap, my parents must’ve found some rare collector’s edition to surprise me."
I turned on my computer and inserted the disc. The game booted up like normal, the title screen flashing that familiar logo… but something was off.
The music was fine—at first. But in the background, buried beneath the cheerful chiptunes, I started to hear… screaming.
Faint. Echoing.
Distant, but unmistakable.
It creeped me out a bit, but I shrugged it off and hit the start button.
Then my computer shut off.
Just... gone.
Screen black. Fans silent.
"What the…?"
I tried powering it back on. Nothing. Not even a beep. That’s when everything around me started to blur, like my vision was glitching out. I blinked—and suddenly…
I was there.
Newtrogic High Zone.
The world of the game. But this wasn’t some VR setup. I looked down at my hands.
I was Knuckles.
I stumbled back, heart racing. “How the FUCK?!” I yelled
It felt like a dream.
I wished it was a dream.
Not far ahead, I saw a flickering cage—the same glitchy contraption from the game. Inside was Mighty the Armadillo. Except… he didn’t look quite right.
I ran toward it, confused and still hoping I’d just passed out or something. As I got closer, the cage began to glitch more violently, pixelating and warping. The ring-link mechanic activated, and suddenly I was tethered to Mighty.
That’s when I realized—I couldn’t move forward.
Mighty was pulling me back.
And smiling. A wide, unsettling grin.
His voice cracked and said,
"H0W AB0UT Y0U SMI1E F0R M3..."
