This entity exists outside of the Sonic the Hedgehog universe, where the series is fictional.

You're a being of power that I can't even begin to comprehend; you destroy, you warp, you play with things bigger than I could ever grasp. It is not my place to tell you how to exist or entertain yourself. I'm just glad I'm not them.
― The Archivist, "On The Archivist's Thoughts..." by GiRANiA

The Archivist is a fan character created in 2025 by artist and writer GiRANiA for their Lord X–centered AU "The Sinew Torn In Two", which introduces several alterations to the established lore. A data-driven and hyperlogical human woman, the Archivist operates as Lord X’s primary assistant within his domain. She is tasked with maintaining the structural integrity of his world, cataloguing its anomalies and archiving the data from his games. Despite being human, she functions as a critical support to Lord X’s system, ensuring it remains stable and ever-expanding.

Appearance[]

Human[]

In her human form, the Archivist is a short woman, with a thin, almost fragile frame and skin so pale it often carries a faint blue-purple tint (most noticeably on her lips). Her hair is short, wavy and a deep rust-red, usually tousled. She has dark purple eyes, framed in heavy black eyeliner and eyeshadow. On each cheek, three small freckles form an inverted triangle. She dresses almost exclusively in black, favoring practical, comfortable clothing.

Knuckles Vessel[]

Her first vessel was a Knuckles-based model, with rust-red fur matching her human hair. The eyes were dark purple, with the same heavy black eyeshadow. The skin of the snout and crescent moon on its chest were a pale blue; hands had individual fingers tipped with long, sharp nails, instead of Knuckles's usual boxing gloves, and used simple, short black boots.

Current Vessel ("Gifted" Vessel)[]

As a reward for her loyalty, Lord X eventually gifts her a new vessel, still modelled after Knuckles's, but meant to resemble an Irish Water Spaniel, with long feathered ears. This vessel keeps the original hair and snout colors, but the rest of the body is entirely black. The eyes are empty, glowing yellow, and the face has no mouth, leaving her permanently expressionless. For functionality (according to Lord X), the hands have four digits instead of five.

The Tale[]

Sometime during 2016, Josephine Weber—or simply Pepper—first comes into contact with Lord X after buying a second-hand laptop containing corrupted data disguised as a Sonic ROM hack. When she tries to erase it, her soul is partially drawn into his realm, leaving her trapped within his digital world.

Lord X immediately notices her unusual lack of fear, her obsessive curiosity, and her strong technical aptitude. Instead of destroying her, he offers a pact: she becomes his Archivist, responsible for cataloguing and stabilizing the structure of his world, and in return she is allowed to exist in both realms. By day, he resides in her mind, observing the human world through her senses; by night, as her consciousness slips, she returns to her vessel inside his domain.

Part I - The Contract[]

What begins as an attempted execution becomes an anomaly; Pepper’s soul is pulled into Lord X’s world as prey, but instead of terror, he finds composure, curiosity and analytical thinking like he's never seen before in another human ["The Worst Possible Reaction"]. Amused and a bit unsettled, Lord X proposes a pact: she will survive and return to the material world—if she agrees to return and "work for him" when her consciousness drifts off.

Thus she becomes his Archivist, stabilising corrupted sectors, cataloguing his experiments, recording the outcomes of his games, etc. In time, he grants her a superior vessel, one that conceals emotional expression and grants unrestricted movement through his domain ["Transfer When Ready"].

Part II - Symbiosis[]

Over the first year, they stop behaving like predator and asset. Their bond is obviously not emotional, but sapiential, rooted in their shared hunger for knowledge. He teaches her the architecture of his world and answers all of her questions ["Why Sonic"]; in exchange, she allows him to see the human world through her eyes, and becomes his anchor in moments of instability ["Your Mind and Mine"].

The Archivist refuses to judge his atrocities, claiming moral irrelevance, even if she is a human watching other human's suffer by his hand ["On The Archivist's Thoughts..."]. And yet, when his temper fractures his systems, it is she who repairs them ["Synchronicity"].

Part III - Schism[]

Things change the first time he shows her Alice—a child trapped in a Cream the Rabbit vessel—mutilated into a plush-like trophy, preserved not for necessity, but sentiment. For the first time, the Archivist recoils. ["Memorable Accomplishment"]. Lord X offers no justification and no apology for his actions.

—then understand this: I like what I am.
― Lord X, "Memorable Accomplishment" by GiRANiA

However, when he notices she begins to deprive herself of sleep just to avoid him, he recognises the fracture this revelation causes. For the first time, Lord X attempts restraint and learns how to beg ["Seele In Not"].

Part IV - Severance Doctrine[]

The Archivist grows defiant and gravitates toward human presence despite her self-imposed isolation, entertaining Andrew's attention (his nerdy co-worker) solely to remind Lord X that she is not owned. As a consequence, X's possessiveness sharpens into tyranny ["Just To Spite Me"].

These events lead to an argument that ends up becoming a war of existence and, desperate to "punish" her, Lord X severs their bond for three months ["You Would Erase Me If You Could"]. In spite of her pride ["Anger"], she begins to neglect herself, gradually becoming weaker. When illness finally collapses her body, Lord X returns, recognising that he cannot afford to lose one of his most valuable assets.

Part V - Manufactured Devotion[]

In a desperate attempt to keep the Archivist by his side in the long-term, Lord X starts mimicking care, using pet names, monitoring her habits, guding her toward sleep and sustenance, etc—not out of empathy (which he is incapable of), but strategy ["Close Your Machine"], ["An Excuse"]. Andrew’s harassment ["That Parasite"], as the Archivist stops paying attention to him, only reinforces X’s grip on her, which he is ecstatic about ["That Parasite Again"].

Part VI - The Bandado Incident[]

One night, while she's gathering data in Lord X's world, Bandado's sudden invasion causes strife; X is crippled, the guardians scatter and the effects are felt in the material world as well, in the form of a massive blackout. Only Zetsubo survives unnoticed, and she guides the Archivist in these desperate times. For three days, she fights without him, until she forges the kill-switch that contains Bandado and saves both worlds ["BLACKOUT"].

When Lord X finally speaks again, his voice is barely alive. He and the guardians owe their continued existence to her, but Yokubo never forgives it. ["For Saving Every Last One Of Us"]

Their Dynamic[]

Lord X and the Archivist are NOT a ship.

Lord X is canonically incapable of feeling, processing, or displaying most emotions, affection included. As a result, any display of affection on his part is not genuine, but rather an attempt to provoke a reaction from the Archivist and manipulate her into complying with his will more effectively. He is, however, extremely possessive of her, as his narcissistic behavior cannot tolerate her directing attention toward anyone or anything other than himself.

The Archivist is aroace and has no interest in romantic or sexual relationships whatsoever. On the rare occasions she entertains someone’s interest in her, it is either to achieve a specific goal or to (as GiRANiA’s followers on Twitter so eloquently put it) “ragebait” him.

Their dynamic is purely sapiential, rooted in what they can learn from one another. Over time, this develops into a more intimate bond due to prolonged proximity, but it remains fundamentally a toxic, codependent relationship (although it improves significantly after the Bandado incident).

Trivia[]

  • Despite being human, the Archivist adapts to Lord X’s world with unusual speed. She shows very little fear and an almost clinical fascination toward its horrors. She also appears to have very little empathy towards Lord X's victims and particularly dislikes Alan.
  • While in her human body, she is able to communicate with Lord X telepathically. She sometimes replies out loud, leading to several awkward moments in public.
  • She never wears bright colors in her human form. Her wardrobe is entirely black or dark tones, with the occasional graphic tee (band logos, mostly).
  • She is a bibliophile. Whenever she’s stressed, she rearranges her bookshelves in an obsessive manner.
  • She is German, but moved to an unspecified English-speaking country in her early twenties, after going no-contact with all her family except her younger sibling Nihil.
  • She is hyperlogical to a fault; she values knowledge above almost anything and has a habit of pushing herself to exhaustion, which X alternates between criticizing and obsessively monitoring. Lord X also convinced her to quit smoking.
  • Their “partnership” oscillates between cooperation and subtle power struggles, with both of them aware that the balance can shift at any moment.
  • Pepper takes pride in the fact that she once defeated Bandado. She doesn’t speak of it often, but Lord X never lets the achievement go unacknowledged.
  • She has a tense relationship with Lord X's guardians, except for Zetsubo, with whom she gets along surprisingly well.
  • According to canon, Lord X is incapable of genuine affection. His possessiveness toward the Archivist stems partly from admiration for her talents and partly from a desire to make her as resilient as possible. After all, replacing her would be "far too troublesome".
  • Her constant presence around Lord X causes her to contract an "illness" known as "Cosmic Exposure", a condition causing a sequence of transformations that progressively distort the affected person.
  • She unknowingly created the entity known as 672 by executing a recursive error handler that absorved stray emotional data from her mental state after the Bandado incident.

"The Sinew Torn In Two" (Webtoons)[]

"Lord X strikes a deal with one of his victims: she’ll serve as the Archivist of his decaying digital realm—repairing and organizing its collapsing code, gathering and registering data from his twisted games. In exchange, he’ll allow her to exist in both planes of existence: during the day, he will share in her mind, observing the human world through her eyes; when her consciousness drifts, she will return to her vessel in X's world. This transactional pact becomes an unexpected companionship."
